JAPAN, WE HAVE NOT FORGOTTEN

Japan is still suffering and needs our help! Our dear friend Isaiah Garza, the face behind Fashion Munster, has come up with a fashionable way to help.

We asked Isaiah where his inspiration came from:

"I was in the mix of designing my new accessories line and I couldn’t help but notice what’s going on in Japan lately. I’ve always told myself I would do whatever I can to give back. I thought just donating money was cool, but designing and donating money is just a little cooler! I wanted to use my talent for a higher purpose, so I designed these fun bracelets. A lot of people are out shopping, but not giving back. I’m not saying everyone is liable to give back, but this just gives them a fun reason to receive a fashionable item and donate to the victims of Japan at the same time! I’m very passionate at leading by action not words, I know if I was in Japan I would be grateful for any kind of help!"

Isaiah's new accessories line will be available for sale next month on fashionmunster.com and isaiahgarzacollection.com. He took a break from designing to focus on other aspects of the fashion industry while launching a few new projects. Now that they are in order Isaiah is ready to put his focus back on designing and is hoping to launch a Spring 2012 Ready to Wear collection in October. We will make sure to keep you posted on that!

"I wanted to make something that represented me as a designer with elements of hard and soft combined. Japan is the land of the rising sun, which inspired the sun charm, it’s such a beautiful thing."

Celebrity Style Crush- Nicole Richie

Nicole Richie’s fashion sense has changed dramatically from her days on The Simple Life with Paris Hilton, to her current status of being a mother, wife, and designer. She has a carefree, bohemian style and is not afraid to mix in a little glamour every now and then. The fashion icon has two very well received lines. ‘House of Harlow,’ which launched in 2008, started with jewelry and branched out to include shoes and now sunglasses. She also has a clothing line ‘Winter Kate’ which launched in Spring 2010. The line features pieces that range from edgy to romantic. Both lines are named after her daughter, Harlow Winter Kate Richie-Madden. Nicole’s lines are vintage inspired and pay very close attention to detail and embellishments. They have that unique Nicole Richie touch that we love.

Nicole’s personal style is described as “boho yet sophisticated.” She is inspired by Native American and tribal art, which she interprets into ‘House of Harlow.’ When you think of Nicole Richie style the first thing that comes to mind is sunglasses. She owns more than 200 pairs! She also is a collector of vintage Chanel bags and owns thirty.  Her style is always evolving and we look forward to seeing what she will wear next!

HELPING JAPAN

Japan was hit by one of the largest earthquakes ever recorded. Although it has been five days since the tragic disaster the situation is not getting any better and the people of Japan need our help. Millions are without food, water, and power. We are praying for victims of this tragic earthquake and tsunami and they need our help now. It is estimated that over 10,000 people have lost their lives. We have been involved in helping these people now we would like to share ways for you to help too. It only takes a moment of your time and a little compassion.

The easiest and fastest way to help is through the Red Cross. Just text REDCROSS to 90999. The Red Cross will donate $10 to the tsunami victims The money is billed directly to your next cellphone bill. It takes two minutes and helps thousands.

Lady Gaga has taken immediate action. The talented artist is selling wristbands and one hundred percent of the proceeds go towards helping those in need in Japan. You can buy a wrist band for five dollars online. She has already raised over $250,000.

You can purchase them here!

Donate used clothing- Many stores are putting out donation boxes in which you can place your gently used clothing including Uniqlo, Comptoir des Cotonniers, and Theory.

Salvation Army- You can donate directly online and all donations are directly for the Tsunami and Earthquake victims in Japan.

Uniqlo's founder and president Tadashi Yana, has donated $12.2 million from his own pocket and Uniqlo will give $4.9 million. "Uniqlo will also distribute coats, jeans, towels and 300,000 pairs of its Heattech thermal underwear to victims, representing an additional $8.6 million of aid," Time adds. [NewsFeed/Time]

The Fashion Industry will be affected by this tragic disaster as well. Tokyo Fashion Week was set to start on March 22 but whether or not the shows will take place still remain in question.

Please take the time to find it your hearts to donate as little or as much as you can. We know we have.

Laura Vela Interview

We first met handbag designer Laura Vela at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week where Laura was chosen to showcase her line. Immediately we were intrigued and set up an interview with the young designer. We were so inspired after sitting down and talking with Laura. We were able to get inside her head and find out who she really is and where all of her great designs come from. We met her on a beautiful sunny day in NYC at the Soho Grand Hotel where we sat, talked, and got to know Laura Vela.

Laura Vela is from Barcelona, Spain. She then moved to Germany at the precious age of 11. Since then she has lived all around the world in places such as Greece, London, Barcelona, and the USA. Traveling at such a young age to so many amazing places and meeting all of the diverse people along the way has made her who she is today. Laura is currently studying Fashion Marketing at Parsons School of Design. She also has an MBA from ESADE Business School in Barcelona. Laura has worked on the set of “Gossip Girl” and with many other celebrities as a stylist at American Rebel, located in the heart of Los Angeles. When she is not traveling Laura spends her time singing, playing the piano, and practicing ballet. Here is what else we found out in our interview...enjoy!

Q&A:

Q: When did you start making handbags?
A: I started making them about 10 months ago. All my handbags are made in Argentina where I spend every summer.

Q: How did you get started?
A: I started selling my bags when I lived in Florida. I would ride my bike around with my bags. I was introduced to Sarah Jessica Parker by Chris North, who I used to style, she bought six out of the eight bags I had with me! I had no idea who she was at the time and after that I no longer needed to ride my bike selling bags!

Q: Was this always your dream?
A: No, I actually started because I was bored one day. So, I went to a leather store in Argentina and just started making a bag. Afterwards people kept stopping me on the street and giving me complements asking where I got my bag this encouraged me to start my own line.

Q: Who is your target customer?
A: Women who are not label obsessed. I want my customers to buy for the design, quality, and love of the product not because of a label or because a certain celebrity is wearing it. These handbags are meant to last forever. They are an investment piece.

Q: Where do you get your inspiration from?
A: I get my inspiration mostly from nature and South America, I am very attracted to the culture and way of life. I feel so comfortable there. I take actual pieces of nature such as tree bark and leaves into my workshop with me for inspiration for my designs. The sea, sky, sun, sounds, emotions, and architecture are all things that inspire me. Oh, and I can't forget fairy tales! Fairy tales are a big part of my inspiration. Life is hard enough as it is surround yourself in good things and have your feet on the ground.

Q: Where is your favorite place to be?
A: Back  in Buenos Aires.

Q: How would you describe your personal style?
A: Everyone has a style it's the way we move and express ourselves. It's not just about clothes and accessories. But I mainly dress depending on my mood. Coco Chanel said it best “Fashion fades, only style remains the same." It's about who you are as a person, how you treat your friends, sister, parents. How you react to different situations.

Q: Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
A: I want to expand into clothing and shoes as well, all product categories. I want to create Laura Vela style everything. I want you to walk into my store and experience Laura Vela with all of your 5 senses. I want to develop a lifestyle for women. The Laura Vela lifestyle.

Q: How do you advertise your merchandise?
A: Right now mainly through interviews and blogs. I have a Facebook fan page, a Twitter account, my website, and word of month. Also, I will be launching my line on Shopbop.com March 15th.

Don't forget to check out Laura's line debuting on Shopbop in just a few days. We know we will!!!
